Blog #2: Word VS Google, ISTE, and Digital Natives

In elementary school, we would go to the computer lab and play around on Microsoft words by inputting images, word art, and creating slideshows. In middle school and high school, I used the word processing software of Google Docs. I like this software because it automatically saves my work, I can access it from anywhere, and I can easily collaborate with others on the same document. My schools were Google based so this was what was expected for the students to use. Now in college, I am able to choose which program I like better. Personally, I enjoy Google Docs better than Microsoft Word since I’ve used it longer. I have no problem with Microsoft Word and will easily adapt to the small changes between the two different software.

The following article has the pros and cons of Microsoft word VS Google Docs: https://bit.ly/3n6egXM

The most meaningful standard from ISTE standards for educators is “Designer”. As a “Designer” the teacher is able to create individual learning techniques for each student. The teacher is able to follow their imagination to create the best learning environment for their students. As a designer, one can create anything they want to benefit their students. One can explore new technology to implement into the classroom and go wild with new innovations. As a designer, the teacher will always learn new tricks from other teachers or from new technology. By specializing, the teacher is encouraging their student to try their best and create a positive environment. Although all the other standards are just as important to be an amazing K-12 teacher, designer is the most meaningful because the teacher can personalize, individualize, and create the environment and activities they want to do to make the best learning experiences for their student.

I do agree that the label “digital native” with today’s youth is accurate. To be a “digital native” a person must be born in a time where there was always technology. The newest generation has grown up in a time where there was always technology. There was never a time in their life where there were no inventions of the phones, computers, or tablets. There are definitely differences between my generation and the teachers generation in regard to use of technology. For example, teachers ask students to help them with a program they want to use instead of vice versa. Additionally, some of my teachers hated technology and made us write everything on paper. Differences between my future students and I will consist of their ability with technology will eventually become better than mine. Although I will not want to admit that I am falling behind in technology, my future student will most likely be better equipped.

  1. I think its interesting that you find that Google doc is the better software, while I understand the sentiment and how you can use it from everywhere I always had trouble with it. But the microsoft word example of playing around as kid made me very nostalgic, I still remember getting mad at how intensely images could mess up formatting if you were not careful

  2. Hi Julia after reading your post everything seems great. I do agree with you as well about today's youth being called Digital native, just the fact that everything is online it shows why they call today's youth digital native.

  3. Hey Julia, it is so cool that you were introduced to google docs in middle school because I didn't learn about it until I was a senior in highschool ! When you say your school was "google based", what exactly does that mean? Just like you, I enjoy google docs more because it's easier to share the link with my classmates for group projects and it's easy to insert files on canvas through the google drive. I like that you stated that the standard titled "designer" gives teachers a chance to showcase their imagination. One of the main reasons I actually want to become a teacher is because of the crafty, artsy and imaginative ideas I have for little children to stimulate their imagination and personal interests so I will be utilizing this standard often. Unfortunately, I am not able to accept that my students will become more hip and better equipped with technology than me like you ! Hopefully, I can always try and relate to them and what's happening presently in the world since I will be a young teacher.
