Blog #3: Copyright and Fair Use, Technology Issues, and Improving Newsletter

Copyright is the protection of one's work online. This includes pictures, videos, and written work. The items are copyrighted so no one can steal their work. Fair use allows people to use a small amount of someone’s work. Although, credit should be given to the source and no money should be made from using another’s work. To deal with these concepts as a teacher while creating curriculum, I will cite my sources and not take credit for another’s work. When having students create their own work, I will first address what copyrighting is so they understand not to use another’s work as their own.

An issue with technology is cyberbullying. To prevent cyberbullying in my future classroom, one of the first lessons with my students is how to behave online. I will teach them that chatting with others online should follow the same rules when communicating in person. For example, I will explain that we only say positive, polite words and not mean, negative words to others on the internet. Another issue with technology is student privacy. As a teacher, I will never give out information about my student to others in person or online. I will also explain to my students that whatever is put on the internet can not be taken down. As a result, they should not put any information about themselves on the internet.

New skills acquired from working on the Newsletter Design assignment are creating columns, learning how to change the outline of boxes to fun swirly lines, making a border, and inserting hyperlinks. To improve my newsletter in the future, I would put different information in the articles. I would probably write about different topics. Additionally, I would create a different permission slip because the lines on where to write were difficult to place. Skills I learned in the assignment will be used in my future career as a teacher when creating a new newsletter and the curriculum. When making worksheets for my students, I now know how to make the columns on the paper. I can also add cool designs that I did not know of before. The hyperlinks will be very helpful in emails to parents and other teachers. Below is a screenshot of the newsletter I designed.

  1. Hey Julia! I completely agree with all of the points you made. Teachers need to lead by example, especially with younger students that look up to teachers as a role model. This doesn't just apply with copyright, but of all aspects of teaching. Students will follow in the steps of teachers that act with kindness, whether online or in person. I also really love your newsletter design! Mine is a little too bland, but yours is perfect; not too busy but also with little white space.

  2. I like your approach to address the problems of technology implementation in the class so that when situations arise, the students know how to handle it. Also, great newsletter design, looks great!

  3. Hi Julia! I really like the point you made about the teacher’s role in maintaining student privacy, I hadn’t considered the teacher’s role in keeping the students information private. Your newsletter looks really good, I love the Mickey Mouse theme!
